Mayday

Overview

Mayday Weddings is a mission-critical job board that helped New Zealand wedding vendors find qualified replacements if they had to isolate due to Covid-19.

I designed, developed, and deployed this web app using low-code tools to solve a real and urgent industry problem. Vendors could post a job with key details (skill, region, urgency), triggering automated outreach to relevant professionals. One-click responses made it easy for vendors to browse a shortlist of available replacements—each with ratings, experience, and contact options.

The app connected over 500 vendors and saved more than 100 weddings. It gained national attention and was featured by The Project, 1News, Newstalk ZB, RNZ, NewsHub, and more.

Mayday’s success came not just from speed of development, but also from a deep understanding of the industry, careful prioritisation, and ongoing collaboration with users to improve the product after launch.

Product & Domain Expertise

I designed Mayday’s workflows from first-hand knowledge of how vendors actually work—what information they share, how they respond to last-minute crises, and what gets in the way. Every field, email, and click was crafted to reflect that reality. The result was a tool that felt familiar and intuitive, not something vendors had to "learn."

I also supported users post-launch—answering questions, gathering feedback, and making improvements. That ongoing engagement helped build trust and ensured Mayday met real-world needs.

Prioritisation & Backlog Management

I focused first on building a fast, resilient MVP: job posts, email triggers, one-click responses, and candidate display. Once that was solid, I triaged incoming issues and requests, balancing technical needs (e.g. email rate limits), User pain points (e.g. filtering by skill level, camera make etc.) and trust-building features such as a review process for profile updates.

This meant Mayday was not only fast to ship, but also stayed relevant and reliable.

End-to-End Ownership

Mayday wasn’t a handoff project — I owned the entire lifecycle. From identifying the core problem during Covid to launching a working platform and supporting it long-term, I led every stage.

  • User journey mapping: I defined how vendors would move through the product—from posting a job, to receiving candidates, to following up.

  • Technical build: I architected and built the system using a mix of low-code tools (Webflow, Airtable, Make, SendGrid) and custom JavaScript. This required integrating five platforms while ensuring speed and resilience.

  • User support: I was the first (and only) line of support—fielding DMs, troubleshooting deliverability issues, and calming nerves when people needed urgent help.

  • Post-launch iteration: I maintained the platform and shipped new features based on real user feedback—adding things like profile editing with review steps, on-page job application, and urgent job filters.

  • Comms & impact storytelling: I also created the brand, wrote the copy, designed the visuals, and promoted the project. This included coordinating media opportunities, which led to national coverage on outlets like The Project, 1News, and RNZ.

This project taught me how to zoom between high-level product thinking and detailed implementation.
